What are some symptoms of a virus on a computer?

i have windows XP, i noticed it takes a bit longer then normal for my computer to start up and fill all the icons on the lower right hand corner where they typically go for most computers. i also noticed that its taking longer once I open up internet explorer to open all the way. i have a compaq lap top, and i got it about 1 1/2 years ago. its always been a pretty good computer, but i noticed these problems the last couple weeks. i do have norton anti virus with internet security and also run Ad-aware SE to find problems. my sons friend had went to mbuzzy.com and got some ring tones and something with lime wire i believe, they were also on myspace. i am not sure if this caused a problem,i am just not sure if some settings got changed or what. normally once i finally get my browser open, it seems to work ok. my internet is DSL and its the only computer I use in the house. i am just trying to check on my computer to see if security settings were changed.
